Week 26th
– 28th May
We finished talking
about illnesses.
We use “To have (or to
have got) a ----ache” with
Headache
– toothache – earache – backache and stomach ache
When other parts of
our body ache, we use:
To have a pain in _________ or my ________ hurts / aches.
I have a pain in my arm or
my leg hurts.
Remember to use
possessive adjectives with parts of the body.
You can
have a pain in your neck.
But somebody can be a
pain in the neck! (or in another part of our anatomy which
sounds less polite!) when they are really annoying!
With throat and eyes,
we use the expression
To have sore /sɔ:/
throat or sore/sɔ:/
eyes.
We can also:
Have a cold / have a temperature / have a cough and sneeze.
When
we have the flu, we usually have a temperature and all our body aches!
When
we have a cold, we usually cough and sneeze!
We learnt
different ways of talking about the past.
|
Past Simple
|
Finished /
completed actions in the past.
|
She worked in
London for five years.
|
|
Actions that happened
one after another.
|
He opened
the door, took
off his shoes and sat on the sofa.
|
|
|
Past continuous
|
To set a
story.
|
The sun was
shining
and people were happy that spring afternoon.
|
|
An action in
progress at some time in the past.
|
The kids were
studying
for the exam in the kitchen.
|
|
|
Used to + infinitive
|
States
or repetitive actions in the past that are no longer true.
|
Her daughter used to have
long black hair. (Now, she is blonde)
I used to go
to the cinema once a moth. (Now, I don’t usually go)
|
Remember
that “used to” grammatically acts like any other ordinary verb in the past.
·
Did your
friend use to
wear glasses?
·
My friend used to wear glasses when she was a
child.
·
She didn’t use to wear contact lenses.
And also
that, in the same way we use “am/is/are going to” for
the future, we can use “was/were going to”, to
express a future action in the past!
They were going to
(unfulfilled future plan in the past) study abroad but they didn’t because they
didn’t get the grant.
We started
the week talking about the past and we finished it talking about the future!
What are you going to
do on holiday? When are you having your holidays? Are you going to travel abroad?
One of my
favourite holidays was the one I spent in Malta about three summers ago. I love
this country, I mean, this island!
See you
tomorrow!
